Athletics South Africa (ASA) has learnt with profound sadness of the death of 38-year-old Elizabeth “Tsontso” Mokolo Moselakgomo, whose body was positively identified by her family following her disappearance after leaving home for an afternoon run.

ASA extends its deepest condolences to the Moselakgomo family, particularly Elizabeth’s daughter, relatives and friends, during this devastating period of grief.

The circumstances surrounding Elizabeth’s death are deeply distressing and highlight the vulnerability of women who should be able to participate in sport and exercise without fear for their safety.

“As an athletics family, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Elizabeth. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those affected by this tragedy. We trust that the ongoing investigation will establish the truth and that those responsible will be brought to justice,” said ASA Acting CEO, Terrence Magogodela.

ASA stands firmly with all women and communities affected by violence and calls for continued efforts to ensure that everyone can run, walk and participate in sport in safety and dignity.
