Athletics South Africa will this month join the global celebration of Kids’ Athletics Day as the international campaign marks five years of inspiring children worldwide to participate in athletics and active play. The 2026 edition of Kids’ Athletics Day represents a major milestone for the initiative, which was launched in 2022 to promote physical activity, inclusion and community participation among children of all backgrounds and abilities. More than 1.2 million children have participated globally over the past four years, with organisers targeting over two million cumulative participants in 2026. As part of this year’s celebrations, Athletics South Africa will host activities in partnership with its provincial structures of Limpopo Athletics (LIMA), Athletics North West North (ANWN) and Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA). The South African celebrations will take place at the following venues: Ngwenani Primary School in Thohoyandou on 25 May 2026 in partnership with LIMA, then at Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg on 29 May 2026 in partnership with ANWN, before finally moving the celebrations to Germiston Athletics Stadium in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg on 30 May 2026 in partnership with CGA. The events will bring together children, educators, coaches and members of the athletics community in a vibrant celebration of youth participation in sport, while encouraging healthy lifestyles and active living. Kids’ Athletics Day continues to serve as an important platform for introducing children to athletics in a fun, educational and inclusive environment. “Kids’ Athletics Day continues to play an important role in inspiring children to live active and healthy lives through sport. Athletics gives young people an opportunity to learn valuable life skills in a fun and inclusive environment, and we are proud to be part of this growing global movement. “In future, we hope to see more joining the annual Kids’ Athletics Day celebrations held globally every May. We want to see even more schools, communities and ASA provinces joining these celebrations in future as we continue building the next generation of athletes,” said John Mathane, Deputy President and Acting President of Athletics South Africa.
