Athletics South Africa has received with sadness the news of the death of Mathews Leeto of Holywood Athletics Club and his coach Adam Motlagale.

The two unfortunately passed away on Thursday following a car accident. They have both represented the country in road running during their careers.

Nicknamed The General by teammates and friends alike, the 34-year-old Mathews took silver at the 2024 ASA Marathon Championships in Durban. While the 64-year-old Motlagale won the ASA 15km crown in 1990 and went on to have a credible finish at the 1993 World Half-Marathon Championships where he crossed in eighth position.

ASA notes their respective and incredible contributions to the sport of athletics, and are confident that their legacies will to live on and continue to be in the hearts of those they touched so dearly.

May their souls rest in perfect peace and may the light of God shine upon them.
